llover a cántaros ( yoh-vehr' ah' kahn'-tah-rohs )

verb ( to pour, to rain cats and dogs )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: Cancelaron la caminata porque estaba lloviendo a cántaros.

The hike was canceled because it was pouring.

2: ¿Vas a correr? ¡Está lloviendo a cántaros!

You're going running? It's raining cats and dogs!

The pouring rain fell heavily around the couple's umbrellas, while the light drizzle helped the garden speedily grow.

La lluvia lloviendo a cántaros cayó pesadamente alrededor de paraguas de la pareja, mientras que la ligera llovizna ayudó el jardín crecen rápidamente.

Olvidé que dejé a que mi gata afuera, y llego llovió a cántaros. A ella no le hizo gracia.

I forgot that I let my cat out, and then it poured. She was not amused.

Aunque lloviera a cántaros, me decidí no ponerme las botas y salir descalzo al patio para aplastar los gusanos que salían de sus agujeros del jardín. smile

Oops. And, now the translation:

"Although it was going to rain, I decided not to put on my bots and left barefoot to the yard to squast the worms that were emerging from their holes in the garden."

Esta mañana llovió sapos y culebras, y debido a que andaba en bicicleta era muy difícil no atropellarlos, pero tuve que darme prisa porque sabía que el pronóstico decía que iba a empezar a llover a cántaros pronto.

This morning it rained toads and snakes, and because I was riding my bicycle it was very difficult to not run over them, but I had to hurry because I knew that the forecast said that it was going to start raining cats and dogs soon.

A bit of silliness, but a good exercise in preterit vs. imperfect. We shall see how many I got right. :) - bosquederoble, Apr 29, 2016
For those that don't know, in some Spanish speaking areas "llover sapos y culebras" is an option for "raining cats and dogs". :) - bosquederoble, Apr 29, 2016

Cuando llueve a cántaros es muy difícil no ser una aguafiestas.

When it's raining cats and dogs it's hard not to be a spoilsport.

Durante mi primer visita a París, estaba lloviendo a cantaros, pero estaba tan encandilada con la ciudad que no me dejaba intimidar y estaba corriendo en la lluvia.

When visiting Paris for the first time it was raining cats and dogs, but I was so excited by the city that I didn’t allow myself to be intimidated and I was running about in the rain.

Un día llovió tanto a cántaros que hubo inundaciones en las calles y nuestro techo goteó.

One day it poured so much that there were floods in the streets and our roof leaked.
