What's the function of "lo" here?

Hello,

I'm reading a Spanish book today and saw such a sentence "Tiene que haber otra forma de ir por la vida sin que lo tengan que arrastrar a uno gritando y pataleando".

I couldn't figure out what the function of "lo" is in this sentence.Where is it referring to? Is it optional here? Also why is "tengan" used instead of "tenga" ?

Can someone please shed a light ?

It could me "you". I understand the sentence as this in English: "There has to be another form of going through life besides them dragging you (or one) kicking and screaming." I'm not a native speaker but that is how it makes sense to me.
