piar ( pee-ahr' )

verb ( to chirp; to whine )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1: "¿Qué me ves?" pió el pollito.

"What are you looking at?" chirped the chick.

2: Niños, dejen de piar. Ahorita les hago de comer.

Stop whining, kids. I'll make you something to eat in a second.

Actually I think that they got their name because people thought they were "barking", but it sounds more like a chirp :-)! - Jraider, Apr 27, 2016

Cuando oyes pequeños ruidos del huevo , ya los pollitos ya pían y se preparan de salir.

When you hear small noises from the egg , already the chicks chirp and prepare to leave it.

Todas las manañas del año pasado, un ave piaba en la ventana de la cabina.

Every morning last year, a bird chirped in the window of the cabin.

The two chicks chirped uneasily as they caught each other staring at the aquamarine lake and the majestic peaks.

Los dos pollitos pió inquieto como cogieron mutuamente contemplando el lago aguamarina y los majestuosos picos.

Según el diccionary piar es un ' tweet' en inglés pero como sabemos todos, hoy en día se dice twittear.

According to the dictionary 'piar' means to tweet, but as we all know these days, one says ' to Twitter'.

Con suerte pronto oiremos piando a la cría de las charas que han construido un nido en los rosales justo afuera de la ventana de nuestro comedor (el que está en el piso arriba).

With luck we will soon hear the babies of the Jays that have constructed a nest in the rose vines just outside the window of our dining room (which is on the upstairs floor) chirping.

Yes that is the real view from my dining room, and yes, I really grow a mass of rose vines to the second floor, which arc over the stairway down from the deck. :) - bosquederoble, Apr 27, 2016
I added an outside picture- The window is in the inlet filled with rose vines, you can see the nest in real life but it is difficult to see in the picture. :) - bosquederoble, Apr 27, 2016
Clearly I need to do a little work on the area. :D - bosquederoble, Apr 27, 2016
I saw the nest and a bird in it. :) - rac1, Apr 27, 2016
Blue jays??? - Jraider, Apr 27, 2016
Yes- they plant peanut shells and hazelnuts in my window boxes. I meant you can't see nest well on the outside picture, although it is readily visible in real life. I think I did well with the inside picture. :) - bosquederoble, Apr 27, 2016
For some reason 'a la cría de...' would sound better to me, without it it sounds incomplete although it seems correct :I - Pablo064, Apr 28, 2016
Hmmm, I was working off of piar, as the subject, but as I think about it, it makes more sense to be the object of oír- so I think your way is better. Thanks. :) - bosquederoble, Apr 28, 2016
Wow, looks fantastic, your place! - annierats, Apr 28, 2016
Thanks, Annie, we like it. I posted inside pictures on the halloween and maybe christmas a year or two ago. :) - bosquederoble, Apr 29, 2016

Ya es tiempo momento para que pío píe con una oración en el juego. ¿Vale?

Now is the moment for me to chirp out a sentence in the game. Okay?

Strangely enough I thought of using "para que" with the subjunctive but I thought it would be pretentious! - Jubilado, Apr 28, 2016

Las pajaros se esconden en las ramas de un árbol pero si puedo oírlos piar, tengo un idea de dónde están.

Birds hide themselves in the branches of a tree but if I can hear them chirp I have an idea where they are.

Pobre pájarito tratando de cantar;

no se puede bailar y no se puede canta,

Por lo tanto, dejar de piar todo el día.

You poor little bird trying to sing;

You can not dance and can not sing,

So, stop chirping all day.
