chubasco ( choo-bah'-skoh )

noun ( heavy storm, heavy shower )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Hay que meter al ganado. ¡Viene un chubasco terrible!

We've got to get the livestock in. A terribly heavy storm is on the way!

2: En las noticias dijeron que mañana habrá chubascos.

On the news they said we'll have heavy showers tomorrow.

Hola Amber. What's the difference between heavy shower and rain? We hardly say "heavy showers' here. Rain is more common. - osas-baby, Apr 23, 2016
If the rain is heavy, we usually say it like that rather than just say, it's raining so the person will realize it's raining hard. It's to put some emphasis on our statement. - rac1, Apr 23, 2016

Here is Baja since we don't get much rain a chubasco is a strong wind that comes up suddenly and dies just as suddenly. It can bring rain but not usually. They usually come in the late afternoon or anytime during the night.

Aquí en Baja porque no hay mucho lluvia un chubasco es el nombre por n viento fuerte que viene de repente y desaparece de repente también. Puede trae lluvia pero normalmente no. Normalmente viene en la atardecer o en la noche.

Today I am leaving to go sailing for a week and I am hoping that we do not have any chubascos this week.

Hoy voy a ir a velar por una semana y espero que no tengamos nada de chubascos est semana.

Algunos chubascos son peligrosos porque puedan pueden producir crecidas.

Some downpours are dangerous because they can cause flash floods.

The puppy ran away from the swirling vortex of the heavy storm, which threatened to take him up any second.

El perrito se escapó del vórtice remolino de chubasco, que amenazaba con llevarlo a cualquier segundo.

Cuando hay un chubasco, en lugar de pedir lluvia lugera, ora por un mejor paraguas.

When there's a heavy shower, don't ask for light rain. Instead pray for a better umbrella.

enter image description hereNos gustaría algunos chubascos aquí porque las pequeñas represas y los lagitos cerca de nuestra lugar todavia están vacios o muy bajos.

We would like some heavy storms here because the small dams and little lakes near our place are still empty or very low.

Siempre los chubascos se causan accidentes de autos en la carretera.

The heavy storms always cause automobile accidents on the highway.

Cuando salimos ayer hubo un chubasco fuerte, y aunque estaba contento porque regaba mis plantas no era divertido manejar por él bajo el aguacero. Sin embargo depués de dos horas lo sobrepasamos y no llegó aquí hasta anoche y era muy débil.

When we left yesterday there was a strong rainstorm, and although I was happy because it was watering my plants it was not very fun driving in it. Nonetheless after two hours we outran it and it did not arrive here until last night and was very weak.

Thanks, I hated por él, but I hated manejar bare, and por ese or este also sounded not so good. Thanks for a solution. :) - bosquederoble, Apr 23, 2016
