If you go to edit your profile (I get there by hovering over my avatar on my profile page- then when it says change avatar I press it and get the page)- then look at the bottom below the green update profile button, there are three options:
Return To My Profile
Don't Send Me E-mail
Delete My Profile
I think the middle one will get rid of the e-mails.
Another option would be to use the feedback button on the far right of the screen to ask the owners of the site to help you trouble shoot why the e-mails are giving you a problem.
