It depends on your interests because you need to enjoy a book to read it. It also depends on your level.
I have read La Sombra del Viento which is set in Barcelona but it was some years ago and I found it difficult to read because it is very descriptive.
The next book I read was 'soldados de Salamina' by Javier Cercas. He is a journalist and I found it much easier to read. It takes place partly in the present day and mainly during the Civil War.
I enjoy detective fiction and a friend who has a Greek husband and lived in Spain for some years lent me a book by Petros Makaris which I enjoyed but by its nature it had a lot of slang and some Police terms. I am currently reading the first of a new trilogy of his against a backdrop of the crisis 'Con el Agua al cuello'
I also like the series of novels by Alicia Gimenez Bartlett about a female detective in Barcelona.
I have an e version of Dime quien soy by Julia Navarro but it is long and I haven't started it yet.
Dolores Redondo is a new successful writer who has Police novels set in País Vasco
I have read La voz dormida by Dulce Chacon. It is about a group of women in prison during the civil war. It was only written this century
Most of the books I have read have been set in Spain. I don't know if you prefer novels in Latin America? Leonardo Padura has a Police series set in Cuba. I have read some of Mario Vargas Llosa, a Peruvian who now lives in Spain, but I have read them in English. A friend has recommended Juan Gabriel Vásquez 'El ruido de las cosas al caer' a novel about drug trafficking set in Colombia.
I can also recommend Lorenzo Silva some of whose detective novels I have read.
Our teacher recommended Miguel Delibes cinco horas con mario He died a few years ago having written most of his novels when Franco was alive. Arturo Perez Reverte has written a lot of novels, one set in Mexico The Spaniard Antonio Munoz Molina who has spent time in New York is also good.
I have previously recommended some childrens books if you want something shorter.
Finally I like watching Pagina Dos which might give you some ideas
Here are a few:
El Príncipe de la Niebla, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.
La Sombra del Viento, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.
El Chamán de la Tribu, by Ricardo Alcantara.
