Cazar - hunting or catching

Since 'cazar' means 'to hunt' and 'to catch' it seems that even with context, it might be hard to figure out the meaning. 'El gato estaba cazando ratones'...hunting or catching?

Clues? Hints? Ideas?

Cazar in my experience has only been to hunt which IF SUCCESSFUL results in a catch. In Spain and a few other places "coger" means to catch, but in Mexico it's a baaaad word. Agarrar, atrapar, are OK substitutes.

I'm from Spain, but ray76 calls me his Feisty Yank Sheila. I have no idea why. smile

I think , just as Daniela says, cazar is usually used ( I'm in Spain). I tried to google it and ' coger' did in this instance not produce any results, 'cazar' has masses of examples. People here use ' coger' for catching a horse in a field, I have noticed. Here is a small example, rather nice of the use of cazar, in alittle article about why cats so often bring their victims home for us to enjoy. Personally I had always believed that that is because gatos prefer pizza and a rat-pizza would be the tops : Here you go, from Mundo Animalia:
