Question

When asking: "¿Do you want to come with me?" other than ¿Queres? o ¿Vamos?...could I use "¿Quisieras venir conmigo?"

Oh, we use "quisiera", but never to ask about a wish, only to express the wish itself xD: "Quisiera/Querría una barra de pan", but not "¿Quisieras una barra de pan?". - 0bito 1 hr ago flag

US English, living in Spain:

If you meet someone you´re attracted to and you want to ask her to the cinema, would it be better to say "quieras o quisieras ir al cine conmigo".

What's the difference in the tone of the two words?

Mexican Spanish:

¿Te gustaría ir al cine conmigo?= Would you like to go to the cinema with me? I think is more formal and appropriate for a first date

Quisieras ir al cine conmigo? works too!

Quieres ir al cine conmigo is more familiar, you say it once you are more intimate with the person in question.

Barcelona:

I would say: Te gustaría ir al cine conmigo? or

Te vienes al cine? Or

quieres ir al cine?

pero no usaría ni quieras ni quisieras, pero a lo mejor me equivoco

Argentina:

¿Quisieras ir al cine conmigo?

o

¿Querrias ir al cine conmigo?

o

¿Te gustaría ir conmigo al cine?

Nicaragua:

quieras is not correct there

yo quiero tu quieres ella quiere nosotros queremos

quieres ir conmigo ?

o quisieras ir conmigo?

Mexican Spanish again:

Hello Josie why you wouldn´t say "Quisieras" I think it sounds polite You say "te vienes al cine " in Spain?, wow that is so direct! sirgawain if the girl in question is mexican I prefer you don´t say "Te vienes al cine"...sounds funny....

Barcelona again:

I think it sounds really old fashioned and the girl or boy in question would probably laugh out loud, Cereth.

Te vienes al cine is very forward, I agree, but even: Te gustaría ir al cine conmigo? sounds almost too polite.

I would choose: Quieres ir al cine? It's neither too formal nor too direct.

I'd say "querrías" or "te gustaría".

Precisely why I said Spaniards reject this use of quisieras. Because Spaniards think it is wrong, only Latin Americans use it. But they do use it. ;) - bosquederoble, Apr 3, 2016

As in English, in Spanish there are a number of ways to ask anything.

Quisieras has the sense of would you like, quieres the sense of do you want. I have seen at least some Spaniards reject this use of quisiera, and state that it must be querrías. But I will quote an answer with a different viewpoint (that it is quite normal in Latin America).

I think there are a few minor differences between them:

• Me gustaría is more of a long term wish, that can only be satisfied over time, maybe a few years. Por ejemplo, Me gustaría ser doctor cuando sea grande would be an example of something a kid would say.

• Quisiera is more of an immediate wish. You're expressing a desire, that you'd like to satisfy immediately or in the near future. In this context Quisiera ser doctor would be more like "I wish I was a doctor" (implying right now), instead of "I want to become a doctor" (in the future sometime).

• Querría has a very similar meaning to me gustaría, but is used much less often (at least in normal, colloquial spoken Spanish). In my opinion, it sounds a bit too formal, but I think it's a matter of preference.

Both answers are informative. I use me gustaría when I want to call someone on the phone in a formal way. Por ejemplo me gustarîa hablar con José rather than using quiero hablar con María OR puedo hablar con Jesus

I believe so. The only doubt on my part is that venir is not used as loosely as come is in English, and should be referring to someone coming to place of the speaker. That being said, I see it like that. Quieres ir conmigo- I have no doubt with. - bosquederoble, Apr 3, 2016
