cuartel ( kwar-tehl' )

noun ( barracks; encampment; quarter )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Los soldados del cuartel se alinearon para la revista matutina.

The soldiers in the barracks lined up for morning inspection.

2: ¡Luchan con todo, hermanos! El enemigo no da cuartel, ni nosotros tampoco.

Fight with everything you've got, brothers! The enemy gives no quarter, and nor do we.

Cuando yo era niño vivía cerca de Valley Forge, donde el ejército de George Washington tuvo su cuartel durante la Guerra Revolucionaria. Actualmente es un parque nacional.

When I was a boy I lived near Valley Forge, where George Washington´s army had their encampment during the Revolutionary War.. Nowadays it is a national park.

El edificio del cuartel general ya con su exterior está transmitiendo prestigio.

The headquarters building with its exterior is already transmitting prestige.

Cuando fui miembro de la armada, no tuve que pasar mucho tiempo viviendo en un cuartel, pero sí, hubo un curso al que me mandaron durante el que tuve que quedarme en uno.

When I was a member of the Navy, I did not have to spend much time living in a barracks, but yes, there was one course that they sent me to where I had to stay in one.

The M.A.S.H. guys didn't have wooden roofs over their heads. Their quarters were more like J Raider's prison tents. - Daniela2041, Mar 29, 2016

Ser recludato en el éxercito puede ser muy difícil para un joven que es sensible o artístico o con mente independiente . Tienen que vivir en cuarteles, entrenar duro, aprender a matar y obedecer todos las ordenes, incluso los que son estúpidos.

Being conscripted into the army can be very hard for a young person who is sensitive or artistic or independent-minded. They have to live in barracks, train hard, learn to kill and obey all orders, even those which are stupid.

La cárcel de la base militar de Guantánamo en Cuba tiene fama como una de las cárceles mas inhumanas del mundo ahora aunque los soldados viven en cuarteles muy parecidos a las celdas de las presas. Hay una valla eléctrica de tres metros de altura rodeando el campamento y los soldados tampoco pueden salir sin permiso. enter image description here

The prison of the Military Base of Guantánamo is infamous as one of the most inhuman prisons on this Earth , even though the soldiers live in quarters that are very similar to the cells of the prisoners. There is a three meter high electric fence surrounding the camp and the soldiers can't leave without permission either.

El mundo sería un lugar mejor si empleásemos todos nuestros recursos en una guerra sin cuartel contra el hambre y la injusticia, y no en ejércitos convencionales.

The world would be a better place if we would use all our resources in a all-out war against hunger and injustice, and not in conventional armies.

A quick, easy one today:

Los soldados viven en los cuarteles cuando ellos no están luchando.
The soldiers live in the barracks when they aren't fighting.

Sorry, copyright!

Can someone please give me a tip on (pelear, luchar, competir)? Thanks.
