What is your question, exactly? If you want to know how and when to use the preterite, it is quite a big question.. - annierats, Mar 9, 2016
I'm pretty sure there's no right answer. What you did habitually in the past, what you did once in the past... different answers. - jtaniel, Mar 10, 2016
But if it is at a basic level preterite will do plus if you answer in Spanish all the past tenses are preterite. - Mardle, Mar 10, 2016

Welcome to the forum Caylie. Have you translated the question or was it always written in English? You say you are new to Spanish and intermediate in English. Do you want to add to your profile your first language/mother tongue? Sometimes it changes how we answer - many people on the forum have a first language where the alphabet and grammar are completely different to English and Spanish.

Here is an earlier thread about the names for the verb tenses in Spanish.

names of tenses

I hope you enjoy reading it, but of course you have put the answer in your title.

Good luck
