ceder ( seh'-dehr )

verb ( to give in; to hand over; to give up )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Si ninguno de los dos cede, nunca llegaremos a un acuerdo.

If neither of us gives in, we'll never reach an agreement.

2: El policía le dijo al hombre que manejaba que le cediera su licencia.

The policeman told the man who was driving to hand over his license.

Good Morning Everyone

I didn't give into the urge to eat the double fudge sundae.

No cedí al impulso de comer la copa helada de chocolate doble.

No llevaba mucho casado cuando descubrí que siempre era mejor ceder frente a las exigencias de mi esposa, incluso cuando no tenían sentido, pero mi esposa ha aprendido a pensar más en el asunto si digo "sí querida" con cierto tono.

I was not married long when I discovered that it was always better to give in to the demands of my wife, even when they made no sense, but my wife has learned to think more about the matter if I say "yes dear" with a certain tone.

A cierto punto, cuando seas demasiado viejo para manejar seguramente, es será la hora de ceder las llaves.

At a certain point, when you are too old to drive safely, it is time to hand over the keys.

En inglés decimos siempre que la posesión es lo que cuenta , y es verdad porque el dueño nunca va a cederte su posesión a tí y no importa como la obtuvo , por las buenas o por las malas.

In English we always say that ownership is 9/10's of the law, and it is true because the proprietor will never give up his possession to you, no matter how he acquired it, by fair means, or foul . enter image description here

There are, as in any country, roadsigns here in Mexico:

Two of them are: Cede el Paso a Vehiculos Sin Frenos...... and Concede el Cambio de Luces.

Why use ceder for one and Conceder for the other?

Hay, como en cada país, señelas de carratera en Mexico.

Dos de ellos son: Cede el Paso a Vehiculos Sin Frenos...... and Concede el Cambio de Luces.

¿Por qué usan Ceder por uno y Conceder por el otro?

Aunque usaba el pretérito en lugar del imperfecto recién (quizá equivoco ahora), nunca voy a ceder hablar ni escribir en español. Generalmente se sabe que digo.

Although I was using the preterite instead of the imperfect recently (I could be wrong now), I'm never going to give up speaking or writing in Spanish. Generally they know what I'm saying.

Conozco a algunas personas quien deben ceder a tratar siempre tener razón. Yo solía ser una de ellas, pero entonces me hice más mayor. Ahora estoy equivocada casi todo el tiempo.

I know some people who ought to give up trying to be always right. I used to be one of them but then I got older. Now I am wrong almost all the time.

Somebody wanted to know the difference between "ceder" and "conceder" I have an instinctive feeling about this, but can't put it into words, so I went and found some meanings.

conceder v. tr.

What I get out of it in English is with "Ceder" you are more willing to turn over something to somebody, whether it be a thing or something you do for somebody.

With "Conceder" You are not quite so willing. You give it up somewhat involuntarily.

Maybe you could ask a truck driver in México? He should know. - 00cc0117, Mar 7, 2016
Very interesting, I thoughtconceder sounded poiter, in Gringo's Highway question, but clearly they are more or les interchangaeable, on the road. - annierats, Mar 7, 2016
Annie, "conceder" is described as politer in several references, that I have! I agree with you! - 00cc0117, Mar 7, 2016
"or described as more polite" - 00cc0117, Mar 7, 2016

Estas palabras deben ser grabadas en piedra para el pueblo de Oriente Medio

Debido Porque ceder ,no es su camino.

These words should be engraved in stone for the people of the Middle East.

Because to give in , is not their way .
