noun ( leap year )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Un punto importante en el argumento de la obra "Los Piratas de Penzance" es que Frederic, el protagonista, nació en el día del año bisiesto.

An important point in the plot of "The Pirates of Penzance" is that the protagonist Frederic was born on Leap Year Day.

Se necesita 365.2422 días para la tierra en órbita orbite alrededor del sol; por lo tanto es necesario añadir un día más en el calendario cada cuatro años, y es por eso que tenemos un año bisiesto.

It takes 365.2422 days for the earth to orbit the sun; therefore it is necessary to add another day to the calendar every four years, and that's why we have a leap year.

¡Imaginate ! Tienes cumpleaños solo el cada cuarto año y estas sin fiesta durante tres anos, pero estas envejeciendo cada día . ¡Que injusticia!

Imagine ! You have a birthday only every fourth year and you don’t have a party for three years, but you are older every day. What injustice!

Siempre me ha parecido que no es justo que el mes de febrero sólo tenga veintiocho días y que los demás tengan treinta o treinta y uno, y por eso propongo un impuesto en los esos con el mayor número, los que deberían tener que donarle a febrero dos días al año de forma rotativa, excepto durante el año de bisiesto durante el que sólo uno sería requerido.

It has always seemed to me that it is not fair that the month of February only has twenty-eight days and the rest have thirty or thirty-one, and so I propose a tax on those with the highest number, which should have to donate to February two day each year on a rotating basis, except during leap year during which only one would be required.

Me gusta la año bisiesto porque llego a retener mi edad actual para un día más.

I like leap year because I get to retain my current age for one day longer.

Un año bisiesto pero ninguna chica me preguntó a casarse con ella.

A leap year but no girl asked me to marry her.

The leap year, a longer winter, a longer cold.

el año bisiesto, un invierno más, una más fría.

En Grecia algunas parejas tradicionalmente evitan casarse en un año bisiesto porque piensan que traería mala suerte en el futuro.

In Greece some couples traditionally avoid marrying in a leap year because they think that it would bring bad luck in the future.enter image description here

Febrero tiene 29 días solamente en los años bisiestos.

February has 29 days only on leap years.

I couldn't help to post this cartoon about it:

Idioms:

No tener caso (algo): to be meaningless, useless.

Faroleados: dirty, stained.

Si quieres recordar cuándo se realizan los Juegos Olímpicos, es siempre en los años bisiestos. Creo que además hay una elección grande en los EEUU. Eso es mucho para caber en un día de más.

If you want to remember when the Olympic Games are held, it's always in the the Leap Year. I believe there is also a big election in the US. That's a lot to fit into one extra day.
