There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: No quiero que mis papás vean el penoso estado de mi cuarto.

I don't want my parents to see the sorry state of my room.

2: El penoso labor de arar los campos les toca a los niños.

The painful labor of plowing the fields is done by the boys.

La penosa labor... The first one is correct. We use adjectives after noum but we can change that for emphasis. In this case the sentence is asking for that emphasis, so I would say "penoso estado". - caiser, Feb 26, 2016

A veces con mi cuerpo viejo todo que hago - poniéndome parado, caminando, llevando cosas, montando pararme, caminar, cargar cosas, subir escaleras - es penoso (¡en todos los sentidos de esta palabra!). Pero es mejor que la alternativa.

Sometimes with my old body everything I do - standing up, walking, carrying things, going up stairs - is laborious (all the meanings of this word!). But it's better than the alternative.

'de la temporada...pero 'en' esta temporada (el Chelsea) ha..' if not 'la temporada ha sido penosA' ;) - Pablo064, Feb 27, 2016
Actually, I was thinking that "penoso" referred to "el Chelsea" not "la temporada" but I'll take your correction. Gracias. - mstivers, Feb 27, 2016

Es muy penoso que el pobre oso polar se vea obligado a sentarse en la roca vacía sin nieve y hielo y es muy probable que sea debido al cambio medioambiental que va a empeorar.

It is very unfortunate that the poor polar bear is forced to sit on the empty rock without snow and ice and it is very likely due to environmental change that it will worsen.

El recorrido a Ecuador fue penoso, pero estar aquí hace toda la frustración y la incomodidad valga la pena.

The journey to Ecuador was hard, but being here makes all the frustration and discomfort worthwhile,

De niño, cuando tomé una clase de música en la escuela, mis esfuerzos para aprender a tocar cualquier instrumento fueron penosos- no tengo ni un poco de talento innato y la verdad es que incluso la armada nunca pudo adiestrarme para marchar siguiendo el ritmo. Por suerte, descubrí otras aptitudes.

As I child, when I took a music class in school, my efforts to learn to play whatever instrument were sorry- I don't have even a little innate talent and the truth is that even the navy was never able to train me to march in step. Luckily I found other talents.

'una clase'...creo que no te esforzaste mucho Bosque o viste que era difícil y lo dejaste, les pasa a todos, podés nacer con talento pero no con la habilidad y eso se aprende desde la práctica y la determinación :) - Pablo064, Feb 27, 2016
Could be, I have no talent for language either, put with persistence I slowly improve. I didn't have to work at it so much in things like chemistry though.:) - bosquederoble, Feb 27, 2016
I don't know how I said "un clase". Thanks, Pablo. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 27, 2016

Your sentence lose the pun in Spanish. To maintain it a bit I would say "un penoso esfuerzo...". By the way labor is feminine word, so "una labor" - caiser, Feb 26, 2016
@Caiser, thanks mate , I am a bit confused , is the sentence OK as it is the loss of the pun aside? - ray76, Feb 27, 2016

In this translation of "Penoso", it means pitiful, sorry, painful, and laborious. Is the laborious associated with labor?
