In Chile we only use the exact money denomination, up until when talking about millions, in that case we refer to them as "melones" or "guatones (fat ones) :) - chileno, Feb 19, 2016

We use both, but I guess strictly speaking it should be "cuanto es (el resutado de) ..."

Edit:

I guess that "son" stays with us when we start learning sums and subtractions in Elementary.

Cuántas manzanas (son las) que quedan, si hay 5 y quito 3? - Entonces cuántas manzanas son?
