In Spanish the word la gente is always singular and takes the same form of the verb as el, ella, usted so *La gente vivió feliz para siempre

In English "people" is always plural. The people are happy.

This is also confusing for Spanish speakers using "people" in a sentence. They want to say "The people is.

La gente is singular, so "La gente vivieron felices para siempre" is incorrect. Occasionally we say las gentes, but it´s this plural usage is almost out of date.
