There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: ¡Salud! Me da muchísimo gusto arrancar este negocio con ustedes.

Cheers! I'm really pleased to start this business with all of you.

2: La vaca arrancó una mata de brezo con la boca.

The cow pulled up a clump of heather with its mouth.

Cada año la Administracion Federal de Ingresos (AFI) nos arranca un montón de dinero.

Each year the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) snatches a bunch of our money.

A veces, me siento como que necesito arrancarme de esta aburrida y monótona vida de la ciudad, a un lugar como Honduras.

Sometimes I feel like I need to run away from this boring and monotous city life to a place like Honduras..

Hay películas que me arrancan lágrimas pero creo que esas películas están buenas si arrancan sonrisa también, porque asi es la vida, lagrimas y sonrisas juntas.

There are films which move me to tears but I think those movies are good if they make me smile too, because that’s life; tears and smiles together.

Mi marido me dijó- ¡No!, ¡dile no!. - No, dije, no arranca. - Vale, dijo el hombre, esperen por favor. Así aprendí la palabra 'arrancar' por tener una áveria en Mallorca.

A few years ago we were on holiday on the island of Mallorca. We rented a car for one day and were going to take a trip around the island. I was driving, heading North, and my husband was reading the map and telling me what to do when the car started to jerk and soon afterwards the engine gave up. I tried to start it, but it was useless. I had to ring the hire-car office, a very small office, and explain to the man in the office where we were ( on the hard shoulder, onto which we had pushed the car) and that the engine had died. '' Can you start the car? '' the man in the office asked.'' Yes, well, no, I don't know '' , I replied because I didn't understand the word ' arrancar''. My husband told me '' Tell him it won't start!'' I said'' No, it doesn't start' . 'Ok' said the man , '' wait, please!'' And that's how I learnt the meaning of ' arrancar'' , by having a break-down on Mallorca.

My teacher told me not to use 'weed' for 'yuyos, mala yerba' I think she was wrong right? Can I use 'weed' for that? - Pablo064, Feb 11, 2016
To a gardener, a weed is any plant that is anywhere you don't want it, although usually they are small and herbaceous. To most people weeds are certain undesirable plants. And of course some people use the term weed for marijuana. ;) - bosquederoble, Feb 11, 2016

¡No podía arrancar el coche para volver a casa anoche, por lo tanto tuvo que caminar a casa a pie porque el último tren ya había ido! ¡El único problema fue que había olvidado (a?) traer su abrigo y estaba lloviendo a cántaros! wink

He was not able to start the car to return home last night, therefore he had to walk home on foot, because the last trrain had already left! The only problem was that he had forgotten to bring his raincoat and it was raining 'cats and dogs'!

Corrijan mi español si es necesario, por favor smile
