There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: Cada ciclista lucha para ganarle a la competencia.

Each cyclist fights to beat the competition.

2: Hay una competencia de baile mañana en el centro.

Tomorrow there's a dance contest downtown.

Anteanoche, mi esposa y yo disfrutamos viendo la competencia entre los Panthers y los Broncos, pero era un caso de “cuál es el menor de dos males”, y los únicos participantes que a mi esposa le gustan de verdad eran “Coldplay”.

The night before last, my wife and I enjoyed watching the competition between the Panthers and the Broncos, but it was a case of “which is the lesser of two evils”, and the only participants that my wife truly likes were “Coldplay”.

There was not enough offense for most people, but I thought that it was a hard fought game :-)! - Jraider, Feb 9, 2016
I have no idea what you're talking about but I'm glad your wife was happy , for once. - annierats, Feb 9, 2016
She is happy more often than not, but for the game to make her happy, either Seattle or Green Bay would have had to been playing. In the absence of that, at least they gave her Coldplay for the half-time show. We still enjoyed watching the game. ;) - bosquederoble, Feb 9, 2016

I realize now what a major event it is. :) - rac1, Feb 9, 2016
Bigger than the superbowl? - Jraider, Feb 9, 2016
Good sentence, I think, rivalry is surely a very good translation. - annierats, Feb 9, 2016
@jraider---Yes, it's much bigger than the superbowl. Everything in Spain comes to a total stop. Nobody goes anywhere, every bar and restaurant is filled, every home has the TV on. In Spain it is not a sports event it is an obsession. - Daniela2041, Feb 9, 2016

Tengo muchas ganas de ver las competiciónes hípicos internacionales de saltos que se celebrarán en la Dehesa de Montenmedio, cerca de mi pueblo, Vejer de la Frontera, al fin del mes de febrero y en marzo. Es una competición que no tiene competencia por su clima en esta temporada del año, y se llama el Circuito del Sol.

I'm looking forward to seeing the international Show-jumping Competitions which will be held at the Dehesa de Montenmedio, near my hometown of Vejer de la Frontera, at the end of February and in March. It's a competition that has no rivals because of it's climate at this time of year and it's called the Sunshine Tour.

No hay competencia en la que juegue y gane, pero sí puedo ganar dinero de mi trabajo. ¡Momentito! Se me olvidó que estoy jubilado.

There is no contest that I can play and win, but I can profit from my work. Wait! I forgot that I’m retired.

El policía me dijo que rescatar gatos no era de su competencia, así que llamé a los bomberos.

The cop told me that rescuing cats is not whitin its competence, so I called the firemen.
