There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Nuestra meta es fomentar grandes lectores desde una edad temprana.

Our goal is to develop voracious readers from an early age.

2: El lector no lee su tarjeta de crédito, señor. ¿Tendría otra?

The reader isn't reading your credit card, sir. Might you have another?

La poesía es la forma de literatura mas antigua porque antes de que existiera la palabra escrita y los libros, había hombres que recitaban poemas muy largos de los heroes y la gente de las aldeas y los pueblos les escuchaban con gran interés y hablaban sobre las historias exactamente como hacen los lectores modernos.

Poetry is the most ancient form of literature because before the written word and books existed, there were men who recited very long poems, telling tales of heroes, and the pepole of the villages and towns used to listen to them with great interest and discuss the stories, exactly as modern readers do.

Según nuestra religión, es un pecado ir a lector de cartas y preguntarle qué va a ocurrir en el futuro. Pero la mayor parte de la gente (incluyéndome) debe haber ido allá hasta una vez en sus vidas.Es irónico.

According to our religion, it is a sin to go to fortune tellers and ask them what is going to happen in the future. But most of the people ( including me) must have gone there at least once in their lives. That is ironic.

Por favor, corrijan mis frases, si es necesario smile

Hola, amigo. The word "gonna" in English is a spoken abbreviation of "going to", and you should generally write it "going to." - Jubilado, Feb 6, 2016
Oh sure, you are right Jubilado! Sorry, it is just a habit even though I know that is written as "going to" :P Thanks for reminding me :) - AndréYuhai, Feb 6, 2016

Fui una ávida lectora desde la infancia, y en esa época mis compañeros de escuela hicieron lo mismo, pero ahora los niños prefieren la pantalla.

I was an avid reader since childhood, and at this time my classmates did the same, but now children prefer the screen.

Hi Mstivers! Shouldn't it be "están" instead of "son" ? :) Or maybe "leen" for the present tense. I am just wondering please tell me if I am mistaken :) - AndréYuhai, Feb 6, 2016
You are right! Thank you. - mstivers, Feb 6, 2016

I'm told that the students at the local high school prefer actual books. Apparently they're regarded as a status symbol. Who would've thought? - AnnRon, Feb 6, 2016
I love books. There is something about the rustle of pages. Besides that you never have to charge the battery. :) - Daniela2041, Feb 7, 2016

Es un arte ser un buen lector quien puede leer un cuento en voz alta hasta tal punto que las palabras cobran vida en la mente del oyente.

It is an art to be a good reader who can read a story aloud such that the words come to life in the mind of the hearer.

Antes era un buen lector de novela histórica, me gustaría retomar mis habitos de lectura. ¿Seríais tan amables de recomendarme un buen libro?

Before I was a good reader of historical novel. I would like to resume my reading habits. You would be so kind as to recommend a good book?

Si los padres son lectores y leen a sus niños pequeños todos los días, al tiempo de comenzar en la escuela los niños tendrán un buen vocabulario y el deseo fuerte de aprender.

If the parents are readers and read to their small children every day, at the time of starting school the children will have a good vocabulary and a strong desire to learn.

En algunas universidades tienen la constumbre de emplear "lectores" que dan las clases. Creo que es porque las unis no tienen que pagarles un salario apropriado al trabajo que hacen.

In some universities they have the practice of employing "lectors" who give the classes. I believe it's because the "unis" (universities) don't have to pay them a salary commensurate with the work they do.

A veces tengo que usar un lector de huella digital en mi trabajo, y solía tener que hacer muchos intentos antes de que lo aceptara, pero con el tiempo he aprendido a colocar el dedo precisamente como lo coloqué la primera vez y ahora sólo tengo que hacerlo tres veces como máximo.

Sometimes I have to use an electronic fingerprint reader at work, and I used to have to make a lot of tries before it would accept it, but with time I have learned to place my finger precisely like I placed it the first time and now I only have to do it three times at the most.

Whast interesting lives you people lead. Are you in prison or a prison officer? - annierats, Feb 6, 2016
No, that is not my profession. I think I have seen enough movies where fingers are cut off to use the print to be comfortable with that concept. :D - bosquederoble, Feb 6, 2016
