Plural or singular homework help!
How do you know if a verb in singular or plural? For example i had a fill-in-a-blank question like this: ___________(ser) las diez de la noche cuando mi amigo____________(venir) a visitarme. In the beginning I put era but it turned out the answer was eran...WHY?

First of all, it should be written: las diez de la noche
The article "las" is in the plural, that should give you a hint as to whether you have you use era or eran.
For the second verb, if we replace mi amigo with a pronoun we would use el which is a singular pronoun, the verb will have to match that therefore it will be in the singular form.
Because diez is plural, it is more than one. It would only be era if it were one o´ clock.
Welcome to the forum. I see you have added your level of Spanish, Can you also add your level of English? Some people are learning English and Spanish.
If you look at the profile of the person who has already answered you will see you have a reliable answer from a fluent Spanish speaker.
Do you know what your Spanish sentence means? There is a translator on site which is great for basic phrases.
In this case we are told the time the person comes to meet you. In Spanish to say 1 o'clock you talk about 'it is one hour' hour is a singular feminine word in Spanish so you use 'es la una' However, all the other times are plural as there are a number of hours. In your sentence you have ten hours - las diez [in some parts of the world the c and z sound like an s] Therefore you need a plural verb.
As aileribel says in the second part of the sentence you are talking about a male friend [amigo] which in English can be rewritten as he which is singular.
Why not revise how to tell the time. There are lots of lessons on the site.
