Gracias.

At least in Chile the word "chucha" is a bad word. So, we try to convey that word by saying "chupalla" which in turn it is a hat. smile

I wonder if something like that happens in Mexico with that word "chupa".

Else, I agree with jellonz that it derives from "that sucks"

Mexicano

www.youswear.com/index.asp?language=Mexican Have a look here mate , you may change your mind about the word . - ray76, Jan 27, 2016
Yes, I agree, but there are some phrases we don't know, and yes, you can say chupa on those way, but not just "chupa", more common when you are surprised in some bad: "Chúpala". - 007e54d7, Jan 27, 2016

In NZ we can say "That sucks" when something bad happens. Perhaps this usage of "chupa" is the same.

Gotcha Ray. I think the rudeness of it must vary regionally, or even by age group. For me it is very mild and commonly heard. Like: "That sucks [eggs]" but not anything else :) - jellonz, Jan 26, 2016
I was going to say something like that, but wasn't sure. It's got to be a regional thing. It's not heard among Mexifornians. They say "Chale!" - Daniela2041, Jan 26, 2016
