There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

During the weeks following their graduation, the students did nothing but sleep and eat.

No salgo para comer a menudo pero este fin de semana tuvimos dos invitaciones para almorzar con amigos en días sucesivos y , pues, ya me siento tan llena que hoy no quiero cocinar , ni quiero dar una vuelta con los perros. Solo quiero tumbarme en una hámaca. Así nace la flojera.

I don't often go out to eat but this weekend we had two invitations to lunch with friends, on consecutive days, and well, now I feel so full that I don't want to cook nor do I want to take the dogs for a walk. I just want to fling myself into hammock. Thus is a couch potato made.

En los años últimos los sucesivos gobiernos de nuestro país , sean derechistas o izquierdistas gobernaron muy mal con resultados desastrosos.

In recent years, successive governments in our country, being rightist or leftist, ruled poorly with disastrous results.

Yes, a comma after leftist. you could also express it thus: ...in our country, whether on the right or the left, ruled poorly.... - Jubilado, Jan 25, 2016
Politicians:-(((!!!! - Jraider, Jan 25, 2016
Go with Jubilado, whether rightwing o leftwing.. - annierats, Jan 25, 2016
I think "rightist" and "leftist" are fine when talking about political persuasion. Agree that a comma is needed after "leftist." - AnnRon, Jan 25, 2016
I agree, Ann. It's in the dictionary like that and on several pages I looked at. :) - rac1, Jan 25, 2016

Just f y i on the spelling. I'm logged into Google Chrome all the time and I have English set as my correcting language. Yesterday I chose Spanish for an email but when I went back to English it still is correcting Spanish. Try it someone and let me know. - Jubilado, Jan 25, 2016

El libro en el que he estado trabajando durante tanto tiempo está ahora con un agente, y estoy soñando con el numero de semanas sucesivas que esté en la lista de bestsellers de The New York Times.

The book that I've been working on for so long is now with an agent, and I am dreaming of the number of consecutive weeks it will be on the New York Times bestseller list.

(Should I have used "estará" instead of "esté"? There are still a lot of situations in which I don't know whether subjunctive is required and, if so, which tense. This refers to an unknown (not to say highly unlikely :-D) future, so I chose subjunctive.)

Thanks, Pablo. Sí, es verdad. We'll see how it goes from here, but getting an agent was the first big hurdle. - AnnRon, Jan 25, 2016
Apart from writing the book, that is. - AnnRon, Jan 25, 2016
There are four areas of confusion I have all the time: when to use ser/estar, por/para, imperfecto/indefinido and Subjunctive. I think I am not alone! - jennysk, Jan 25, 2016
You definitely have company, jennie. - AnnRon, Jan 25, 2016

El año pasado, gané en tres torneos sucesivos.

Last year, I won in three consecutive tournaments.

(Nota: No es cierto. Sí que gané en uno, pero aquí tuve que usar la palabra "sucesivo.")

(Note: Not true. I did win in one, but here I had to use the word "sucesivo.")

P.S. This is not me; but she looks a lot like me doing my thing.

Porque nuestro feriado cayó un martes este año, muchas personas se han tomado el lunes también y así que tuvieron cuatro días sucesivos sin trabajo.

Because our public holiday is on Tuesday this year, many people have taken Monday off as well and so have four consecutive days without work.

¿Si lanzas una moneda y cae cara arriba noventa y nueve veces sucesivas, cuál es la probabilidad que caiga cruz arriba la próxima vez?

If you flip a coin and it ends up heads ninety-nine times in a row, what is the probability that it will end up tails the next time?

50/50 would be the answer you should give in a statistics class. The one if you assume there is not some factor that causes the coin to favor landing face side up. ;) - bosquederoble, Jan 25, 2016
