"mi" versus "my"

Question

I am corresponding with a native of Guatemala. He often uses my when I would expect him to use mi - but I am in the early stages of learning Spanish. Is there an explanation? The Spanish of Guatemala?

Example: "Ahora permítame hablarle sobre my persona."

A vote for filling out your profile and sharing some of your life. Don't be surprised by misspellings by native Spanish speakers. In the few occasions when 2 or more letters sound alike they will happen. - Jubilado, Jan 24, 2016

The Spanish y has the same pronunciation as the i. He is probably misspelling mi.

Thanks for the tip. As I dig deeper keeping in mind the possibility of mispelling, I find it solves more of the words I was having trouble identifying. - pardadw, Feb 16, 2016
