gota ( goh'-tah )

noun ( drop; ounce )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: El sol se veía reflejado en la gota que caía de la hoja.

The sun was reflected in the drop that fell from the leaf.

2: Esta película no tiene ni una gota de humor.

This movie doesn't have an ounce of humor in it.

Una gota de sangre es suficiente para controlar el nivel de azúcar sanguíneo y con eso un diabético ya hace mucho por su salud.

A drop of blood is sufficient to control blood sugar level and a diabetic already does a lot for his health.

Hay un método de tortura que no deja cicatrices, se llama la gota china o tortura de gotas de agua y consiste en dejar caer una gota de agua fría en la frente del víctima cada cinco minutos. Después de unas horas o unos días el pobre víctima se vuelve loca , creo.

There is a method of torture that doesn't leave scars. It is called Chinese Torture or Torture by dripping water, and consists in letting a drop of cold water fall on the victim's forehead every five minutes. After a few hours, or a few days, the poor victim goes mad, I believe.

Hace muchos años, Anton van Leeuwenhoek se divirtió mucho en describir todos los animálculos que podía ver en una gota de agua con su microscopio. Hoy en día la mayoría prefiere no pensar en los las bacterias y otros organismos que podrían estar viviendo en nuestro agua.

Many years ago, Antonie van Leeukenhoek enjoyed very much describing all the animalcules that he was able to see in a drop of water with his microscope. Nowadays the majority prefer not to think about the bacteria and other organisms that might be living in our water.

Es una pregunta común en todo el mundo pero todavía quiero preguntarles. ¿Un hombre que corre en la lluvia obtiene más gotas que un hombre que camina en la lluvia?

It's a common question all over the world but I still want to ask you. Does a man who runs in the rain get more drops on him than a man who walks in the rain ?

I am not really sure about this sentence so any help will be appreciated. smile

No estoy seguro acerca de esta pregunta así que cualqier ayuda será apreciada. smile

All depends: walker gets less, if rain stops after the runner reaches shelter, but before the walker does. Runner gets less, if runner reaches shelter in a light shower &then; a downpower ensues. Walker can use umbrella, if smart(while runner can't : - ). - Esteban_317, Jan 20, 2016
Wow interesting Esteban, ehehe . Thank you! So walker should use an umbrella :P - AndréYuhai, Jan 20, 2016
That's why you use less water if you run in the shower :-0! - Jraider, Jan 20, 2016

¿No sabiás que el hélice del avión es tan sólo un gigante ventilador que mantiene fresco al piloto?
¿No me crees?
Apágalo, y empezará a sudar la gota gorda.

Didn't you know that an airplane's propeller is just a gigantic fan that keeps the pilot cool?
Don't believe me?
Turn it off and he will start sweating buckets.

“Cuando exprimo una naranja le trato de sacar jugo hasta que deje de salir jugo. Aprovecho todas las gotas posibles para beber.” En efecto una amiga mexicana me lo escribió eso en un mensaje.

“When I squeeze an orange I try to squeeze it until juice stops coming out. I make the most of all possible drops to drink.” Actually a Mexican friend wrote this to me in a message.

David odiaba el calor pero fue en una carrera y tenía la esperanza de ganar. Las gruesas gotas de sudor corrían por su rostro.

David hated the heat but he was in a race and hoped to win. Large drops of sweat ran down his face.

Es horrible vivir en una sequía cuando ninguna gota de lluvia ha caido durante muchos meses.

It is horrible to live through a drought when not a drop of rain has fallen for many months.
