There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Muchachos, ¡merecemos esta victoria!

Guys, we deserve this win!

2: ¿Me recomiendas ir al nuevo café en el centro? - No, no merece la pena.

Do you recommend going to the new café downtown? - No, it's not worth it.

El pequeño Estado de Israel no merece todo el odio y menosprecio que está experimentando actualmente debido a la igorancia de casi todo el mundo sobre su condición tan precaria.

The tiny State of Israel does not deserve all the hate and scorn that it is experiencing nowadays due to the ignorance on the part of almost the whole world regarding it's most precarious condition.

Here's a link to more about the lovely Israeli-American pictured below.

Yes, until 1948, this land was ruled by Turkey, then by the British. It a dry desert land--barren. Nobody really wanted it, then along came the Jews returning home, and made a good chunk of it into a paradise, and are still working on the rest while - Daniela2041, Jan 18, 2016

You are right about this, Dani. Great post! - rac1, Jan 18, 2016
Above, I meant to say that it "was" a dry desert land---etc. - Daniela2041, Jan 18, 2016
Tienes razón, Daniela. (Re: editing. Wondering if you should drop either now Or nowadays. It seems redundant, but perhaps you wanted emphasis: - )... - Esteban_317, Jan 18, 2016

Yes, "now" can be dropped. I don't have it in Spanish. - Daniela2041, Jan 18, 2016

Great Dani - porcupine7, Jan 19, 2016
This is an immensely controversial and complex issue, which I feel shouldn't be discussed in a language learning site. However, calling people who disagree with you "ignorant" is not a great way to have a dialogue. - mstivers, Jan 19, 2016
I did N O T call anybody ignorant. I merely used the word "ignorance" which in Spanish means "lack of knowledge" I'm not aware that it means anything else in English. - Daniela2041, Jan 19, 2016
Furthermore, as long as the mods don't think I'm "too far out" I'll continue to be me. If I do something wrong and get corrected for it B Y T H E M, I'l retract and apologize. - Daniela2041, Jan 19, 2016
Mstivers...If I may...I don't believe Dani was calling anyone ignorant. She was referring to a great many individuals that would love to see that country go under. It's a disgrace in my opinion. - rac1, Jan 19, 2016

..por quinta vez, se lo merecía..pfff puro marketing, no niego que es un excelente jugador, no sé como le iría en otras ligas, en la selección me dio muchas decepciones, puede tener 20 balones de oro pero nunca van a hacer una copa del mundo - Pablo064, Jan 18, 2016

El techo de la catedral de Notre Dame en París es muy alto pero merece la pena de subirlo porque la vista es fantástica y además podemos encontrarnos con el diablo pensador.

The roof of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris is very high but worth to climb it because the view is fantastic and we can also meet the thinking devil.

Incluso el Comité Noruego del Nobel cree que Mahatma Gandhi merecía un Premio Nobel de la Paz, pero en aquel entonces la política era tal que la presión del Imperio Británico hizo que no sucediera antes de que fuera asesinado- hoy en día muchos creen que esto ha sido el error más grande hasta ahora en los decisiones del comité.

Even the Norwegian Nobel Committee believes that Mahatma Gandhi deserved a Nobel Peace Prize, but back then the politics was such that pressure from the British Empire made it so that it didn’t happen before he was assassinated- nowadays many believe that this has been the greatest error to date in the decisions of the committee.

Those were great movies, Mstivers. :) It confounds me too, JR. - rac1, Jan 18, 2016
Your subject in English is "a good person". You should really both in English and in Spanish have the verbs 3rd pers. sing. "no merece" "he deserves" "his life" "le dan" "give him" "mereció" "he deserved". \ - Jubilado, Jan 18, 2016
In English "they" is acceptable in business and journalistic writing to express gender neutral language, but is not correct English grammar. I think gender neutral language is not an issue in Spanish. Peer review? - Jubilado, Jan 18, 2016
This type of gender confusion does not exist in Spanish because we can do away with the personal subject pronouns. and "Su/s" can refer to his/her/their/your/Y'all's. :) - Daniela2041, Jan 18, 2016
Thanks Jubilado. Your 2nd set of remarks, capture my line of thinking - gender nuetrality, and descriptive rather than normative grammar. You have explained the situation with valuable assist from Daniela. I'm not sure yet, if I should revise the post.- - Esteban_317, Jan 18, 2016
Thanks for recommending the movies, mstivers & rac1. I appreciate it. - (Hola Jraider: - ) ... - Esteban_317, Jan 18, 2016

En mi opinión es mejor agradecer que no recibimos el castigo que merecemos que quejarnos acerca de las recompensas que nos falten.

In my opinion it is better to be thankful that we have not received the punishment we deserve than to complain about the rewards that we may be lacking.

Ayer preparé un flan de ciruelas siguiendo una receta en español. Mereció la pena porque fue un éxito delicioso y también aprendí más español al mismo tiempo.

Yesterday I made a plum flan following a recipe in Spanish. It was worth it because it was a delicious success and also I learnt more Spanish at the same time.

Después de trabajar muy duro todo el día, mereció una cerveza, una cena rica y una cama cómodo. Sin embargo, lo que recibió era agua, pan y una manta en la tierra.

After working very hard all day, he deserved a beer, a delicious dinner and a comfortable bed. However, what he got was water, bread and a blanket on the ground.
