There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Translating one is very difficult too - only if the originator and the translator are both very fluent in both languages can the originator know if it is a good translation. - - ian-hill, Jan 16, 2016
Yeap I agree with Ian. Sometimes it doesn't make the same sense. - AndréYuhai, Jan 16, 2016
I try not to. - rac1, Jan 16, 2016
:) Indeed. - annierats, Jan 16, 2016
I only read Spanish, English and French. It's a good thing the great poetic readings from the Bible were translated into those languages. My Hebrew is very limited. I'm OK with Greek, but no where fluent. - Daniela2041, Jan 16, 2016
:) - Pablo064, Jan 16, 2016
Oh thank you Pablo , this must be a record two good ones in a row. - ray76, Jan 16, 2016
Thanks anniee indeed , indeed. - ray76, Jan 16, 2016
@ P F D , I read the 5 translations of Edward Fitzgeralds Rubaiyat of Omah Kaiyam and they are all so different , I pick favourite stanzas from each one. - ray76, Jan 16, 2016
Wow Dani you amaze me reading all those languages even Greek , so you know the Cirilic script ? - ray76, Jan 16, 2016
I think the Russians use Cirilic. To me the Greek alphabet is just the Greek alphabet. Easy. - Daniela2041, Jan 16, 2016
And if you say "It's all Greek to me" I'll fly down to OZ and slap you upside the head. ♥ - Daniela2041, Jan 16, 2016
Thank you for the vote of confidence Amber . - ray76, Jan 30, 2016

En California hay hispanos que usan la palabra "lectura" para traducir el "lecture" en inglés. Es curioso oír eso aun de unos profesores de español que conozco. "Lecture" en español es "conferencia." Entonces, cómo se dice "conference?" Se dice "Congreso" Y ¿cómo se dice "congress" Es "asamblea." Pero afortunadamente, en el gobierno estadounidense, este cuerpo de representantes oficiales se designa con el apelativo de "Congreso" en español. El español puede ser tan divertido a veces, ¿que no?

In California, there are Hispanics that use the word "lectura" to mean "lecture" in English. It's funny to hear that even from some Spanish teachers that I know. "Lecture" in Spanish is "conferencia." Then, how do you say "conference?" You say "Congreso" and how do you say "congress?" It's "asamblea." But fortunately in the American government this body of officials is designated by the term "Congreso" in Spanish. Spanish can really be fun at times, huh?

This has the whole "enchilada" Here you see "congreso" used as "conference."

Well, Bosque, you do educate us in the sciences, so I thought I'd reciprocate by sharing what I know of both Spanish and English. - Daniela2041, Jan 16, 2016
Can you please help me to understand the last sentence that you've written there? "But fortunately in the American government this body of officials is designated by the term "Congreso" in Spanish." - AndréYuhai, Jan 16, 2016
It's that in the US, the congress is called "El Congreso" in Spanish. I use advanced Spanish to help the learners learn more complicated material. - Daniela2041, Jan 16, 2016
I got it but the part I didn't understand was "the body of officials is designated by the term ..." - AndréYuhai, Jan 16, 2016
Yes, thanks for the information, amiga. :) - rac1, Jan 16, 2016
@PorFavor: the expression in quotes means in basic English, This group of elected officials is called "congreso" in Spanish. Did you understand my Spanish? - Daniela2041, Jan 17, 2016

La lectura sin entender lo que estás leyendo no tiene ningún sentido. Así que debes tratar de entender al mismo tiempo.

Reading without understanding what you're reading doesn't make any sense, so you should try to understand at the same time.

He used to frequently forget his reading glasses, but didn't like wearing them on a string. He solved the problem by buying inexpensive reading glasses, and putting them throughout the house, workplace and keeping additional pairs in his car. enter image description hereenter image description here

One pair gets lost or broken and you're in trouble. - rac1, Jan 16, 2016
When I made my correction I overlooked the word "gafas" and was thinking "lentes" o "anteojos" which are masculine and the usual word for eyeglasses. "Gafas" mean sunglasses and I'm not sure if that word is used outside of Spain. - Daniela2041, Jan 17, 2016

Con la lectura vives mil vidas interesantes, el que no lee, solo vive una y tal vez aún una vida aburrida.

By reading you live a thousand interesting lives, who do not read, only lives only unique and maybe even a boring one.

A Adán y Eva les faltaban lectura, les faltaban conneción al internet, tampoco tenían un televisor decente. Claro que que ,cuando apareció el diablo , ambos estaban muy listos para divertirse con cualquier cosa que se les ofreciera.

Adam and Eve were short of reading material, they had no connection to the internet and they didn't have a decent telly. Sure enough, when the Devil appeared, they were more than ready for any amusement that he might offer them.

Cuando era joven me gustaba mucho leer novelas de ciencia ficción y solía leer tres o cuatro novelas por día durante los fines de semana, pero con la madurez las lecturas de ciencia no que no son de ciencia ficción han pasado a ser más interesantes para mí, y leo libros populares de ciencia, libros de texto, artículos e incluso investigaciones científicos primarios científicas primarias.

When I was young I used to like reading science fiction novels a lot and I would usually read three or four novels a day during the weekends, but with maturity readings in non-fiction science have become more interesting for me, and I read popular science books, textbooks, articles and even primary scientific investigations.
