Hello Seymour,

You asked:

In English the words remain the same whichever form of transport we take
eg: I prefer to travel by car, by plane, by bus, by boat, by train, by air, by sea etc...
The most common way is to say: Prefiero viajar en = I prefer to travel by
However, in Spanish it would depend on the words that follow, in this case, how you prefer to travel.
I will explain using examples:
Prefiero viajar ...en tren, (en) avión, (en) coche, (en) barco
to travel overland / by road = viajar por tierra / por carretera
Prefiero viajar por carretera = I prefer to travel by road

I agree with Feliz77. We can also say ".... por medio de ....", ie: Prefiero viajar por medio de las dodge patas (play on words of "dos pies").
