A friend living in Mazatlan described the closing of the highway through the Texas pandhandle as "pigs carrying sticks", I am at a loss to understand the true meaning. Thanks for any assistance.

I have family living in the panhandle and I have never heard this expression. - Jubilado, Dec 28, 2015

I've only heard of this as an old farmers' wives tale. "If a pig carries sticks, the clouds will play tricks" meaning bad weather is on the way.

Alternatively, it might mean it will be a long time before it happens, something like "When pigs fly is when they'll close that highway!"

This makes the most sense to me. My niece in the panhandle didn't respond to my request if she knew the meaning. - Jubilado, Dec 29, 2015
Exactly my thoughts. - rac1, Dec 29, 2015

In Swedish the Pigs are the police, polis, polis potatis gris...

This may or may not be of help.

It could mean this "A PIG, running and carrying a stick, is a dangerous sign of road ruts slick" other weird sayings for weather I know are

RAINBOWS in the winter, on either side of the sun, show very cold weather certain to come.

IF A ROOSTER crows after sunset, he will freeze before morn.

A MORNING fog will freeze a dog. A night fog is harmless as a log.

AN EAST wind is full of fear. The cold will be deathly, and a full graveyard is near. hope this helps. smile
