Question

prescindir ( preh-seen-deer' )

verb ( to do without; to disregard )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: Mi esposo no podría prescindir de sus videojuegos, pero yo sí.

My husband couldn't do without his video games, but I could.

2: Sería un error prescindir de los consejos que te dio el doctor.

It would be a mistake to disregard the advice the doctor gave you.

Hay un proverbio indio „ La verdadera riqueza consiste en saber prescindir de las cosas superfluas.”. Tiene razón, pero es una opción individual qué cosas son superfluas a cada quien.

There is an Indian proverb "The real wealth is being able to be without superfluous things.". It is right, but it is a very individual choice which things are superfluous to each person.

Una vez, cuando era muy jóven, tuve que prescindir de comida durante una semana, por haber comprado regalos de Navidad para mi familia. Mi esposa todavía no entiende por qué no me gusta derrochar comida, pero por lo menos está de acuerdo con que siempre deberíamos mantener alguno algo de dinero en el banco para emergencias.

Once, when I was very young, I had to do without food for a week, because of having bought Christmas presents for my family. My wife still does not understand why I don't like to waste food, but at least she is in agreement that we always should maintain some money in the bank for emergencies.
