La Palabra Del Dia: "homenaje"
homenaje ( oh-meh-nah'-heh )
noun ( tribute; homage )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.
Guidelines:
Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: Las luces que pusieron donde se encontraban las Torres Gemelas se me hacen un homenaje de buen gusto.
The lights they put up where the Twin Towers were seem like a tasteful tribute to me.

¡Salve el día de palabra mutilada! (All hail mangled word day!)
Un día al año debe dejarse de lado para rendir homenaje a todas las palabras en español que del sacrificio sacrificamos en el altar del aprendizaje—podríamos llamarlo día de palabra mutilada. Propongo hoy, 12 de diciembre—un día para compartir historias de palabras que hemos hecho mal.
One day per year should be set aside to pay homage to all of the Spanish words we slaughter on the altar of learning—we could call it Mangled Word Day. I propose today, December 12th—a day for sharing stories of words we have wronged.

Aunque todo el mundo ha oído hablar de las ideas de personas como Aristóteles y Leonardo da Vinci, hoy voy a rendo rendir homenaje a un hombre menos conocido, Herón de Alejandría, quien fue un ingeniero y matemático helenístico que vivió en Egipto, y que mostró bien que los experimentos y no solo la aplicación de la lógica son un buen método de aumentar nuestro entendimiento del mundo natural.
Although everyone has heard of the ideas of people like Aristotle and Leonardo da Vinci, today I am going to render homage to a less-well known man, Hero (Heron) of Alexander, who was a Greek engineer and mathematician who lived in Egypt, and who showed quite well that experiments and not just the application of logic was a good way of increasing our understanding of the natural world.

¡Los pastores que habían visto el ángel mientras velaban y guardaban las vigilias sobre su rebaño rindieron homenaje al rey de reyes cuando vieron el bebé Jesús y lo adoraron! Después de mucho tiempo, los magos llegarón y presentaron regalos de oro, incensio y mirra.
The shepherds who had seen the angel while they were keeping guard over their flock paid tribute* (homage) to the King of Kings when they saw the baby Jesus and worshipped him! Some time later, the wise men (magi) arrived and presented to him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
paid tribute ie: worshipped*
Editors note/s: 1.The bible only mentions the words: " wise men" or in some translations "some kings" but no mention is ever made of the number (how many there actually were) Traditionally, people hold to the belief that there were three, because of the number of the gifts offered but this assumption is neither supported nor refuted by scripture.
2."Some time later" I am not sure how to translate an unspecfied period of time. According to scripture (The Bible) it mentions in Matthew: "Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the King, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, ...." Matt Ch 2 v 1. Jesus was probably not a baby but an infant (toddler) and after the wise men had left him, Joseph received instruction from an angel of the Lord to leave Bethlehem and flee to Egypt because Herod the King was going to kill him. (For Herod will seek the young child to destroy him" Matt Ch 2 v 13) Herod did carry out his threat Matt Ch 2 v 16 and put to death all the male children in Bethlehem and its districts who were two years old and under!
3.This picture of the shepherds paying homage beautifully illustrates that you can worship God standing, sitting or kneeling. God is not concerned with our outward physical posture but the attitude of our hearts, which he can perceive: Do we really mean what we say to him? John Ch 4 v 24.
