There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: ¡Pero qué hombre más culto! Lee el periódico cada mañana sin faltar.

What a a cultured guy! He reads the newspaper every single morning.

2: Mi madre dice que prefiere que la gente se refiera a ella como culta, en vez de como bonita.

My mother says she'd rather people refer to her as educated than pretty.

Some people think that by using learned words they will make a better impression. However, I believe that simple expression is better.

Nunca me parece ser muy culto decir, en inglés, que alguien ha hecho algo "bueno", como "cocinaste eso bueno", pero lo oigo más y más y temo que vaya a pasar a ser lo normal.

It never seems to me to be very refined to say, in English, that someone has done something "good", like "you cooked that good", but I hear it more and more and I worry that is going to become the norm.

(Usé "vaya" para enfatizar que no creo que sea lo normal hoy en día, pero creo que podría ser eso algún día-¿quizás "temo que pueda pasar a ser lo normal" sería mejor?)

No soy cinéfila y la verdad es que no sé que es una película de culto porque cuando este típo de péli estreña, normalmente no hay nadie que se da cuenta de que sea un buena película sino que es algo que se difunde por el boca a boca.

I'm not a cinema addict and, in truth, I don't know what a cult film is because when one of these has it's premiere , normally nobody notices that it might be a good film, but rather, this gets about by word of mouth .

Hmmm, I don't think cult films are necessarily good films- Rocky Horror is an example of a cult film, and I think people dress up like the characters and repeat the lines with actors (having seen the film enough times to know it). It is a social experien - bosquederoble, Dec 4, 2015
