There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Puse paja fresca para los caballos en el establo.

I put fresh hay in the barn for the horses.

2: ¿Me puedes dar una paja para tomarme esta malteada?

Can you give me a straw to drink this milkshake with?

Really, can somebody inform the horse management that hay and straw are not interchangeable.. - annierats, Dec 2, 2015
Hay in Spanish is ' heno' and it is like gold-dust..As there is no grass it is nearly all imported and horses have to eat straw, which is the straw from arable crops, not grass. - annierats, Dec 2, 2015
Hola and thanks all. ♥♥♥♥ - rac1, Dec 2, 2015
There isn't much nutrition in straw. We should take up a collection and send you some bales of lucerne hay! - jennysk, Dec 2, 2015

¡Uf! Para mí, buscar una buena respuesta para "La palabra del día" es como buscar un aguja en un pajar. (montón de paja)

Shesh! For me, looking for a good response to the "Word of the Day" is like looking for a needle in a haystack. (pile of hay.)

This guy cheated.

Straw is a good mulch but hay is even better as it nourishes the soil as it breaks down. - jennysk, Dec 2, 2015
I often use Cane mulch , which is a residue from Sugarcane. - ray76, Dec 2, 2015

The thing in the picture I, an American, would call a basket and never a hamper. A hamper to me is something into which you put your dirty laundry. - Jubilado, Dec 2, 2015
Now I would love that. I love baskets. :) - rac1, Dec 2, 2015
..los regalos.. hechas de paja.. :) - Pablo064, Dec 3, 2015
To me, an American, a hamper can be used for various things, but it has a lid or some kind of closure. - AnnRon, Dec 3, 2015
To me, a hamper is a packed up sort of basket full of goodies for Aunt Christine or Granny because you couldn't think of anything else to give them. - annierats, Dec 3, 2015

La paja es un material muy útil. En el pasado era utilizada para muchas cosas. Todavia hay muchos productos hechos de paja - los sombreros, las bolsas, las cestas, las alfombrillas y, en la construcción de pequeños edificios, se puede usar la paja para el techo y incluso los muros.

Straw is a very useful material. In the past it was used for many things. There are still many products made from straw - hats, bags, baskets, mats and, in the construction of small buildings, it is possible to use straw for the roof and even the walls.

When John turned red, his friends thought he had a guilty conscience, until they realized that he was sitting next to the radiator! lol wink

Con correcciones:

¡Cuando Juan se puso rojo, sus amigos creían que tenía la cola de paja, hasta que se dieron cuenta de que estaba sentado al lado del (o junto del) radiador! wink

To have a guilty conscience = tener (el) rabo (Col, Ven) or (RPI) la cola de paja

dieron cuenta de que..estaba sentado not 'sentando' wink.. - Pablo064 17 hrs ago

Aunque los diccionarios lista “paja”, o por lo menos “pajita”, como una traducción de “drinking straw”, aprendí la palabra “popote” por eso en México y nunca se me habría ocurrido usar otra palabra antes, pero parece que hay considerable variación regional en esto.

Joshua bebe cócteles con una paja, pero Alberto utiliza las pajas simplemente para agitar sus bebidas. Obviamente, a Alberto le gusta besar los vasos.

Joshua drinks cocktails with a straw, but Alberto uses the straws simply to stir his drinks. Obviously, Alberto likes to kiss the glasses.

A mi me falta almacenaje para la paja y por eso la tengo en un chozo tradicional en el jardín. El chozo tiene un techo de paja y es un edificio pequeño pero muy lindo.

I'm short of storage for the straw and because of this I keep it in a traditional shelter in the garden. The shelter has a thatched roof and is a tiny building but very sweet.

Jraider, there is some alfalfa but it tends to be mouldy and indifferent...Plus it's hard to get hold of. I think there could be a market for imported hay from Canada.. - annierats, Dec 3, 2015
