I would call her April , because it sounds so sweet. - ray76, Dec 2, 2015
I would call her "Abril" because that is her name. I wouldn't call someone named "Juan" the English equivalent "John" just because he is in the US. - Winkfish, Dec 2, 2015
Never change a person's name unless they ask you to do so. - ian-hill, Dec 2, 2015

Although I agree totally with what has been said by all, this does not always

become "one size fits all" .Whenever I am among Italians , French or germans

and to a lesser degree Spanish people my name becomes the equivalent name

in their language because it is a universal name . Australia is one of the largest

and most successful multicultural country in the world, but we have a tendency

to "Australianise" names in our peculiar manner by adding an "O" at the end of

names,'David'='Davo, Freddy = Fredo, we are also very big on " nicknames" so

unless you object you never know what you will get , consequently most people

are cool with that , we do not take it too seriously . So long as you pay for the

next round of drinks you can call me "Tío Ramón" .

Hola Happysebilla,

Bienvenido al foro Spanishdict smile

Has dicho/ has preguntado:

Hello Happysebilla,

Welcome to the Spanishdict forum smile

You said/You asked:

Si una persona llamada Abril viaja a Estados Unidos (E.E.U.U.) ¿Los estadounidenses la llamarían April o Abril ? (If a person called April travels to the United States, would the American people call her April or Abril?)

Well, I completely agree with Daniela, Ian and Winkfish that you should call her 'Abril', because that is her real name! The Spanishspeaking people that live in the United States would call her 'Abril'. I don't know if the English speaking people who live in this same country would call her Abril o April, I suppose it depends on each person, whether they respect her culture or not! They may try to anglicize it (her name)!

I hope it helps smile

Everyone has different opinions about what you call someone when they have a Spanish name, but I definitely think that unless you're told by a person that you may call them the English equivalent of their Spanish name, I would just call them by their Spanish name. So, I would call her "Abril", and not "April".

Please feel free to correct my spelling & grammar if you think there is something incorrect. smile

You are correct , but just do not try that with Chinese name it is too hard , they usually pick an Anglicised name for you. - ray76, Dec 3, 2015
