Hello! I want to tell one story of a two cars that were racing and a third one outrun the two of them. I know that racing as a noun is carrera, but how do you say "were racing" ? Also how to say outrun - exceder, sobrepasar? Which one is the correct? Thank you smile

Here is what I think.

Dos carros estaban compitiendo y otro los pasó.

When you use the word "de carrera", to a native Spanish speaking it sounds as "in a hurry = ¡Voy de carrera!

Well, I'm sory to tell you that racing implies to be in a hurry, no matter if it is on foot, on horse-back or in cars, it is a fast game. - annierats, Dec 2, 2015
Why are you sorry about? We are talking about Spanish right, and about the use of the word "racing" in Spanish and its context, right?. My point is that in Spanish we would not use the expression "de carreras" in the way you are thinking, or tnmiroslavova - farallon7, Dec 2, 2015
Ok, thanks, don't get upset. - annierats, Dec 3, 2015
Wouldn't you have been annierats? We are all here to learn a little bit more, but some people here are on the defense if their, or one of their friend's comments gets corrected, or a beter comment is written. That's the main reason why I left Spanishdict. - farallon7, Dec 10, 2015

I would say: Dos coches iban de carrera y un tercer coche los rebasó.

Hello nmiraslavova

Welcome to the Spanishdict forum smile

You said/asked:

I would say: Dos coches estaban competiendo y un tercer coche los adelantó (o los pasó)

You can use any of these verbs to mean to overtake: adelantar, pasar o rebasar

ex: He overtook the truck = Adelantó (o pasó / rebasó) el camión.

I hope this helps smile

Corrijan mi español, si es necesario, por favor smile
