Could someone please tell me if chicaro is an acceptable Spanish spelling for the English word pea or peas? My 7yr old's teacher insists it is spelled, C H I C A R O, but every site I checked it is, C H I C H A R O. I did find a reference that says the Portuguese word for peas is spelled chicaro. Her teacher is non-Latino North American. Thank you!

Point your child's teacher to the most authoritative of authorities, the RAE, which has never heard of chicaro.

And then, if you suspect that you might ask more questions here, please add gender and language competencies to your profile. It helps people help you.

This is a very common word in Mexico, but the RAE dictionary won´t find it usless it is spelled correctly. Chícharo (with tilde) is pea.

chícharo.

(Del mozár. ?í?ar[o], y este del lat. cic?ra).

  1. m. Guisante, garbanzo, judía. no disparar, o no tirar, alguien un ~.

  2. locs. verbs. coloqs. Cuba. No trabajar nada.
