Hola Ray, I’ve just had this in class and apparently you have to use different verbs for different things. I'd be interested in getting comments from others on my understanding of this.

To stop a bad habit you use dejar de.

When saying that somebody has quit their job you have to use the verb renunciar.

To stop doing something in general, you can use either dejar de or parar de.

Ejemplos

1. Quiero dejar de fumar - I want to stop smoking.

2. Yo renuncié a mi trabajo hace tres años - I quit my job 3 years ago.

3. Stella no para de hablar cuando en clase. - Stella does not stop talking when in class.

4. Sara no quiere parar de nadar . - Sara does not want to stop swimming.

But how about,"ending a relationship" ? - I think that terminar might be used in this case. Acabo de **terminar ** la relación con Pilar .

Hola, you don't need the "para" just the command (deja or deje -formal)

Deja de molestarme. (Stop bugging me) or "Deja de darme lata"

Deja de fumar en mi casa. (Stop smoking in my house)

@ Tomas: Lo nuestro se ha terminado// se acabo lo nuestro ( our relationship is over, it has ended) @ Ray: if you are the person who wants to end the relationship the usual phrase, I believe is: Ya no te quiero.. This will end most relationships very effectively.

I think: Mi corazón dejó de latir ( if it stopped for good) .

Mi corazón se detuve ( it skipped a beat).

Engine-trouble: The best thing is to say'' El coche ha sufrido una avería'' ( It's broken down)

El motor se estropeó ( the engine stalled)

El motor de mi coche se detuvo de repente,

también entonces mi corazón. se detuvo.

The engine in my car stopped suddenly, also then my heart stopped.
