If I want to say "I went to a dinner and there was live music" would i say " Fui a una cena y habia musica en vive" or would I use hubo?

One use of the imperfect is often called "setting the stage" -- describing the scene or providing background for something that happened. There were two people playing when I arrived. There were cookies in the oven when the doorbell rang.

The live music occurred before, during, and after your arrival, so the imperfect -- había -- is the way to go.

well technically it was an event, so it only occurred while i was there. it was like a 2 hour thing and it ended... thoughts? - 0feliax, Nov 16, 2015

My audio course has used both "hubo" and "habia" in virtually identical contexts, so I believe you can get by very well using either if you're not sure which one is the "most" correct.

I would say : Fui a cenar.. Apart from that, go with the other answers, they are excellent.
