It's my understanding that is this something more heavily used in the DF (Mexico City), but I hear it in Northen Mexico (Tijuana) as well.
When I used that word, I had the sense that "los chidos" as I used it would have some implication of the guys trying to be cool, trying to be macho, the wannabees. But my knowledge of slang is too poor to have any confidence in that. I would be interested in comments from anyone truly familiar with it as to whether that is indeed the case.
