Aunque no comprendía Español muy bueno, muchos Españoles podían hablar inglés así que yo entendía.

Although I didn't understand Spanish very well, many Spaniards could speak English so I understood.

Aunque no comprendía muy bien el español, muchos españoles podían hablar inglés bastante bien para que yo entiendiera. (The way you had it, if it weren't for the English, I would have had difficulty understanding what you meant.) Even your English is a little strange toward the end of the sentence. I would have said, "Although I didn't understand Spanish very well, Many Spaniards could speak English well enough for me to understand it."
