Question

Why is the difference between the singular and the plural of this word?

Why is the plural "caracTEres" and not "caRÁCteres? Try as I may, I cannot find any similar words in the Spanish that so change the accent. Does this kind of change have a name (grammaticalr/orthographical term)?

I don’t know the name or why. But two more examples that shift the stress in the plural, or so I think:

Régimen, regímenes

Espécimen, especímenes

Carácter. Forma/modo de ser y también símbolo escrito.

Carácteres. Plural de forma/modo de ser.

Tenemos carácteres opuestos y por ello siempre estaremos enfadados.

Caracteres. Plural de símbolo de escritura.

El español y el inglés emplean caracteres latinos en su escritura , mientras que para escribir números emplean caracteres de origen árabe.
