Abbreviation for hola

My prof. always greets me with " 'la," which is presumably a shortened hola, but no-one who I know who is a native speaker seems to use the same shortening. Is it a real thing I can use? Or is it just her?

Hola is hola, there is no any other way to say it.
In the rural small towns the people used to say hello between them, only with a neck up movement and saying eh or ah, but this is not a shortened hola
