Is this spelled properly?
I am trying to say he is 36 years old (my father). Is this correct? él tiene treinta y seis

Yes, as long as everybody else knows that you are talking about his age.
Else you might be talking about cars, pins, or anything under the universe. Right?
Else, you have to add "años" to your version.

In some ways, yes. Just like Chileno said it would be correct unless you were talking about something else.
Now if you were trying to say My father is 36 years old, then it would be
mi padre tiene 36 años
