There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Maybe somebody could point out that this is a bit of a particularily false friend, the word particular? - annierats, Oct 16, 2015
Thanks, Annie. :) - rac1, Oct 17, 2015

Hay una partícula elemental en particular que se denomina el quark extraño, pero no tiene nada de particular entre los quarks en conjunto, simplemente fue el primero descubierto de la segunda generación, y ayudó a explicar la propiedad de la extrañeza, la que se relaciona con partículas (no elementales) que tienen una vida media que es "extrañamente" larga.

There is one elemental particle in particular that is called the strange quark, but it really is nothing special among the quarks as a group, it simply was the first discovered of the second generation, and helped explain the property of strangeness, which relates to non-elemental particles that have a half-life that is "strangely" long.

...I wonder if there are cute plush quarks out there. I'd love to add that to my doll collection. - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015
Well there is one that has charm: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charm_quark - bosquederoble, Oct 16, 2015
Oh, my! You're right. I google imaged charm quark and there's a really cute friendly pink quark and other colors too. - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015
...they got strange quark plushes too. - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015
You get a vote for managing a picture, my tools for picture-making have gone.. - annierats, Oct 16, 2015
I know the codes for putting in a picture. Apparently the strange quark plush has three eyes. :D - bosquederoble, Oct 16, 2015
Besides, I think you're sentence is great, if a bit hard to comprehend, in gneral, not in particular, perhaps.. Jeje - annierats, Oct 16, 2015
Well, we'll see. I tried a few things I was not completely sure of, as I often do. If I write something I am completely sure of, all I learn is that I have a tendency to make dumb mistakes. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 16, 2015
Thanks for adding the plushes. Isn't that strange quark hilarious? It reminds me of the three eyed fish from The Simpsons. - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015
It would never have occurred to me that such a thing would exist, until I saw your comment. The whole concept is hilarious. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 16, 2015

Ayer estaba hablando con una amiga mexicana ayer. Me dijo que hay algunas palabras que usan hablantes de español que viven acá que no ocurren en Mexico. Por ejemplo “romper la ley” es más como en inglés y en este caso particular es correcto decir “quebrar la ley”.

...usan los hablantes..como el/en inglés ..and 'ayer estaba hablando...' would be better :) - Pablo064, Oct 17, 2015
In English it is okay to say "Yesterday I was talking...." "I was talking yesterday..." or as I had it with yesterday at the end. Although I think in English style that is called a misplaced modifier. Thanks Pablo! - Jubilado, Oct 17, 2015

How did you get this graphic on without the toolbar? - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015
Hmmm....I may not be able to do that because it's a graphic I created so I don't think it comes with an address. I'll have to think about this. - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015

Thanks, annie for good advice. Seeing how flexible you were in adapting to the situation with the toolbar, I figured I'd take your advice and make some adjustments without any graphic. - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015
When the toolbar returns, I'll post the graphic and a new sentence that will fit better. - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015
I shouldn't have posted today. I may hold off the graphic project for another word of the day. - Sassette, Oct 16, 2015
I sent the SD techs a message about the toolbar. :) - rac1, Oct 17, 2015
Well done Sassette, I hope we soon get the toolbar back! - annierats, Oct 17, 2015

Es verdad que varias personas tienen particulares preferencias en la comida. Por ejemplo, a mi marido no le gustan las fresas, la berenjena o el cantelupo. En cambio, a mi amiga no le gustan el mango o los arándanos. A los dos les gustan las colas de Bruselas.

It is true that various people have particular preferences in food. For example, my husband doesn't like strawberries, eggplant or rockmelon. On the other hand, my friend doesn't like mango or blueberries. Both of them like Brussels sprouts.

Note: I can't find the word for the particular sweet melons we have here called rockmelon or canteloupe. This is the one I meant, not watermelon {sandía).

No somos muy molestados por las llamadas a nuestro número de linea fija y la mayoría de las pocas que hay, son de gente que dice- ¿ Este es la empresa eléctrica de Barbate? Yo digo que no,este es una casa particular y ya terminamos la conversación sin más.

We're not bothered by a lot of land-line calls, and the majority of those that we get are from people who ask: '' Is that the Electricity Company of Barbate?'' I say that no, this is a private house and thus ends the the conversation without further ado.
