what does este mean?

Question

I know este means "this" but what I don't understand is when it is used when the person is thinking... like when they get asked a question and they answer "este uhmm...." it wouldn't make sense to say "this uhmm..." so why do they say it ? Or what other meaning does este have ??

And to make it more complicated Este also means east. Maybe they are saying "East uhmm..." - Jubilado, Oct 15, 2015
