Apuntes vs. notas

Apuntes vs. notas

Are "apuntes" and "notas" interchangable when talking about taking notes, as in the notes you take in class? I always learned escribir apuntes as to write notes and sacar buenas notas as to get good grades.

I learned that notas was used for musical notes and as the word for grades.

Can anyone clear this up for me? Thanks.

Would "tomar nota" = take notice make sense.

To me anotar y apuntar are the same, because they mean to write (down), but "tomar notas" is less specific than "tomar apuntes". The latter would mean you have to be more detailed.
