There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: El herrero decidió usar hierro para construir el portón de la mansión.

The blacksmith decided to use iron to make the gate of the mansion.

2: Los vegetarianos a veces sufren de bajos niveles de hierro.

Vegetarians sometimes have low levels of iron.

Quien a hierro mata , a hierro muere –dice la Biblia, pero podemos ver que esta oración nunca paró a la gente ni en las guerras ni en los crimenes.

Who kills by iron, dies by iron -says the Bible, but we can see that this sentence never stopped people neither in the wars nor in the crimes.

Las locomotoras de vapor de antaño se refieren a menudo como caballos de hierro. Parece adecuado que los caballos de hierro vienen con los colectores de la vaca.

The steam locomotives of yesteryear were often referred to as iron horses. It seems fitting that iron horses come with cowcatchers.

Iron Horse
Caballo de hierro (Iron horse)

Cowcatcher
Colector de la vaca (Cowcatcher)

La cadena de tiendas de departamentos "El Palacio de Hierro" fue nombrado así cuando construieron su primera tienda en Mexico DF, pues fue el primer edificio construido de hierro y acero en la ciudad.

The chain of department stores "El Palacio de Hierro" was named this way when they constructed their first store in Mexico City, as it was the first building constructed of iron and steel in the city.

Durante la conquista española de América latina los conquistadores tenían una ventaja enorme, el hierro. Las armas de hierro eran mejores que las de los iindígena que tenían mucho oro, pero el oro no es un metál que sirva mucho para herraduras de caballos ni para navajas o espadas. Por eso, el hierro a veces vale mas que el oro.

During the Spanish Conquest of Latin America the invaders had an enormous advantage; iron. Weapons made of iron were better than those of the nativeswho had a lot of gold but this metal is not so useful neither for making horseshoes nor for knives and swords. Because of this iron is sometimes worth more than gold.

Aunque la mayoría relaciona el ferromagnetismo con el hierro, hay otros elementos, como el níquel y el cobalto, y aleaciones y compuestos que pueden tener esta propiedad.

Although most people associate ferromagnetism with iron, there are other elements, like nickel and cobalt, and alloys and compounds that can have this property.

La Olla de Hierro Fundido Una gran ventaja es que la olla de hierro fundido es un excelente conductor del calor, así que necesitaremos menos energía para cocinar.

The Cast Iron Pot A big advantage is that the cast iron pot is an excellent heat conductor, and as such we will need less energy to cook.

¡Fierro viejo que vendan!

Any old iron?

En el mercado de antigüedades de La Lagunilla en la ciudad de México puedes conseguir viejas herramientas y otros objetos de fierro.

At the Sunday Lagunilla antiques market in Mexico City you can find old tools and other objects of iron for sale.

*In Latin America, it is common to say and write "fierro"

En España a los caballos de pura raza española todavía, hoy en día, se marcan con el hierro del críador. Para mi es una barbaridad sin sentido como todos tienen su chip puesto .

Even today, in Spain, the purebred PRE horses are still branded with the brand of the breeder. To me this is an autrocity and totally unnecessary, as all are micro chipped anyway.

En Australia hay mucho mineral de hierro, y recientemente la economia ha estado muy bien porque pudimos venderlo a los chinos.Sin embargo ahora los chinos no quieren tanto y tenemos que pensar en otro modo de ganar dinero.

In Australia there is a lot of iron ore, and recently the economy has done very well because we could sell it to the Chinese. However, now the Chinese don't want as much and we have to think of another way of earning money.
