Un poquito feo
I was in the elevator holding my baby boy when a spanish couple entered after us. The man stated quietly "... un poquito feo." the girl did not respond. I got off at my floor. Google translate says "little ugly." I just want to make sure that there is no convention of calling a cute buy "ugly.." Any opinion would help.

Feo is not used as an idiom, it only means ugly for appearance, behavior, or general nature of something. To call a baby boy cute, we say "lindo" "mono" "precioso" "divino" "gracioso" "bonito" "chulo" (in this sense), but never "feo".
Some people just aren't nice, and will say things if they think you don't understand them. Because of my appearance ( I look very Gringa) I have experienced insults in Spanish from time to time, and the offenders are shocked when I growl something back at them in Spanish.
