I have an issue with the word "callate"

Hola
I've heard that the word "cállate" can mean both "shut up" or the more polite "be quiet". Is this true? if not how would one properly say each word en Español?

Silencio por favor.
Permanezca/esté en silencio por favor.
no hable por favor
Callese/callate
Cierra la boca
Cierra esa bocaza

Matjam makes a good point, ie:
¡Cállate! .... Shut up!
¡Cállate la boca! ... Shut your mouth!
Te deberías callar para no meterte en un lío ... You should be quiet so as to not get into a mess / problem.
