Question

My Spanish is "not very good looking". I am going to meet a little girl in South America who I sponsor. I want her to feel comfortable with me and I am going to try to speak with her in Spanish. My question is, would it be inappropriate for me to ask her not to use "usted" and to not call me "Señor". I don't even like to be called Mister in English.

I think this is simular to a family relationship, so your request is appropriate.I would say something like: Vamos a tutearnos (hablar de "tú") porque somos como familia. With this there should be no need to tell her not to call you "señor".

Let her call you by your real name- after all, Spanish and English words in names are basically the same.
