ojalá ( oh-hah-lah' )

conjunction; interjection ( I wish; I hope; I hope so )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1: Ojalá pase el examen de entrada a la universidad.

I hope I pass the university entrance exam.

2: Mañana va a ser un día hermoso. - ¡Ojalá!

Tomorrow's going to be a beautiful day. - I hope so!

3: Ojalá no tuviera que irme mañana.

I wish I didn't have to leave tomorrow.

Notes:

The Spanish "ojalá" is derived from the Arabic phrase "law sha'a Allah," or "God willing."

La canción "Ojalá que llueva café" sigue siendo uno de los éxitos más populares de Juan Luis Guerra.

The song "I hope it rains coffee" continues to be one of the most popular hits of J. L. G.

A fellow's sitting at the counter in a cafe drinking a cup of coffee, another guy walks in sits down next to him and says, "Looks like rain." The first guy says, "Yeah, but it tastes like coffee!" Pa dum pum! - Jubilado, Sep 27, 2015
Si se refiere a los éxitos sería en plural: "más populares", amigo Luis. :) - crucesignatus, Sep 27, 2015

Les voy a ser honesta en esto. Ojalá que tuviera un montón de dinero. Entonces podría visitar y ver todos los lugares que he anhelado conocer--hasta mi propio país natal.

Let me be honest with you. I wish I had a big pile of money. Then I could visit and see all those places that I have longed to know---even my own country of birth.

For those on SD who are trying to make this world a friendlier place I have no problems with that. My point is that no matter what I do it will never generate romantic interest so any advice in terms of forming friendships is useless to me. - Sassette, Sep 26, 2015

Hago un deseo cuando encuentro un camión heno: ojalá seré volveriá a mi casa hoy en un condicion de felicidad y quedar ese manera.

I make a wish when I meet a hay truck: I hope I will return home today happy and stay that way.

we 'ask for wishes' :D 'Cuando encuentro un camión de heno 'pido un deseo'..ojalá hoy pueda volver a casa feliz y quedarme de esa manera...' - Pablo064, Sep 27, 2015
I agree with Pablo, Roveg. - crucesignatus, Sep 27, 2015
Wishing on a hay truck is from the midwest US. My dad would grin and announce the opportunity. I don't know the origin. - roveg, Sep 27, 2015
Very interesting. I guess in English "asking for a wish" is called "praying." - roveg, Sep 27, 2015
And the rest of your rendering is wonderful. I really worked myself into a knot trying to make the sense of the sentence clear. - roveg, Sep 27, 2015
Roveg, praying and wishing are not the same. Anybody can wish for things, haytrucks or no, but praying for things rewquires a faith in some God or other. - annierats, Sep 27, 2015

Ojalá pudiera recorrer el mundo un en un yate grande de lujo tripulado, pero la vida no es así, y cada vez que simplemente le pregunto a mi esposa "¿Cuándo podré jubilarme?" me dice "Debemos reunirnos con nuestra asesora financiera". Y quizás esta declaración podría servir como una respuesta a la pregunta de Manity sobre la libertad, pero quizás algún día lo desarolle más.

I wish I were able to travel the world in a crewed luxury mega-yatch yacht, but life is not such, and each time that I simply ask my wife "when can I retire?" she tells me "we need to meet with our financial advisor". And perhaps this statement could serve as an answer to Manity's question about freedom, but perhaps someday I will expand on it.
