There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Cuando una máquina está funcionando bien, tiene un sonido característico. Por lo tanto, es posible decir que algo está mal si el sonido cambia.

When a machine is functioning well, it makes a characteristic sound. So it’s possible to tell that something is wrong if the sound changes.

Si un árbol cae en el bosque y no hay nadie que lo escuche, ¿hace un sonido? (¿Hace ruido?)

Thanks, Pablo! smile

If a tree falls in the forest and there is no-one that hears it, does it make a sound?

It makes a sound, but no one is there to hear it. That's my philosophy anyway. ♥ - rac1, Sep 23, 2015
If a tree falls in the woods, and there is no observer, does it even fall. (Or does it exist in a state of superimposed probabilities until an observer happens upon it). :D - bosquederoble, Sep 23, 2015
Yes it makes a noise - but it could sing a national anthem and still be of no consequence. :) - ian-hill, Sep 23, 2015
All events have a consequence, whether we are aware of it or not :-)! - Jraider, Sep 23, 2015

Cuando estoy en un match (o partido) de Karate, el sonido más agradable para mí es cuando el arbitro grita "¡ippon!" a mi favor.

When I'm in a karate match, the most wonderful sound for me is when the referee shouts, "Ippon!" (point!) in my favor.

En mi juventud oí una canción por de Simon y Garfunkel que se llama "Sonidos de silencio." Fue una paradoja que me hizo pensar de en los misterios de la vida.

In my youth I heard a song by Simon and Garfunkel called "Sounds of Silence." It was a paradox that made me think of the mysteries of life.

Los sonidos se transmiten los sonidos como ondas elásticas que se basan en oscilaciones de la presión del aire u otra sustancia, pero que siempre requieren una media de algo algún tipo. Por eso cuando decidieron que la luz se transmite como una onda, postularon que una media existió a través de todo el espacio, que se pusieron el nombre del la cual llamaron éter. Hoy en día se creen que la luz consiste en cuantas que son como partículas que llevan sus propias ondas en una manera que es muy difícil visualizar para la mayoría.

Sounds are transmitted as elastic waves that are based on oscillations in the pressure of the air or another substance, but that always require a medium of some type. Because of this when they decided that light is transmitted as a wave, they postulated that a medium existed across all space, which they named the ether. Nowadays it is believed that light consists of quanta that are like particles that carry their own waves in way that is very difficult to visualize for most people.

So.... can you hear sounds in outer space???? - Jraider, Sep 23, 2015
The only sounds you can hear are old radio and television shows je, je, je. - Jubilado, Sep 23, 2015
Sound cannot be transmitted directly through space. It can be converted into electromagnetic "waves" (whatever those are) and transmitted to a speaker in a spaceship full of air that can transmit the sound. But in open space, there is no sound. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 23, 2015
It's correct but is strange to start a sentences like this, this way would be better 'Los sonidos son transmitidos..'...'de algún tipo'.. 'la cual nombraron/llamaron eter/que llamaron eter'..se cree..' - Pablo064, Sep 24, 2015

Primer intento: Me encanta el sonido de un V8 gutural (winding up) a través de los engranajes.

Segundo intento: Me encanta el sonido de un V8 gutural girando hacia arriba a través de los engranajes.

Tercer intento: Me encanta el sonido de un V8 gutural cuando le aumentas las revoluciones a través de los engranajes.

I love the sound of a throaty V8 winding up through the gears.

Ayudame, por favor. I can't figure out how to say "winding up" as in increasing in RPMs in Spanish.

yo diría 'me encanta el ruido que hace un v8 cuando les subís la marcha' that is common speech so something more appropriate would be 'el sonido que hace el v8 cuando le pasas los cambios' well that sounds like common speech too :D :D - Pablo064, Sep 24, 2015
maybe 'cuando le aumentas las revoluciones' (increase rpms' - Pablo064, Sep 24, 2015
